What price a mentally healthy economy?

£500 million is the answer!

New research by the Paritas team to mark World Mental Health Day has reckoned the cost across West Sussex in relation to mental health and its impact on employment, welfare provision and primary care could be as high £500 million.

Following on from national research by the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health we have detailed the impact on our region- and its huge!

1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem. During a period of ill health a financial cost can be placed upon employers, welfare budgets, and health services such as GPs.

In relation to our businesses alone the cost is likely to be nearly £400 million.

During a time of recession there is a very real need to enable employers to keep their existing staff well, in work, and performing, as the financial costs of mental health within employment will have an even greater impact when running on tighter staffing resources.

And that’s just the impact on our business. We’ve found that the cost of welfare provision in relation to mental health across West Sussex could be as high as £80 million. In addition the financial price of GP appointments for mental health to West Sussex Primary Care Trust is likely to be over £25 million a year

Here at Paritas we know we can play a key role in reducing these costs. We also know we must act quickly to halt and reduce them.

If you would like to speak to our team about the Paritas business audit tools, our Paritas mental health and employment training, our wider recruitment service or how we can find you employment and improve your mental health then contact the team today!

Our research has been widely reported in the local media. It has been featured as the front page headline in the West Sussex Gazette and within the  Argus .

Worthing Theatre group launching mental health project

Theatre Akimbo is launching a new project this September that is intended to support the NHS ‘Time to Change’ campaign. They are launching the project in the form of a rehearsed reading on Saturday 19th September at 12 noon. They would love to hear from anybody who wants to be a part of the project.

The project is built around the play Talk, written by local writer Mark Wilson, about Bethlem Hospital for the insane and how one patient and one doctor wanted to pioneer the concept of ‘talking’ and storytelling as therapy.

Theatre Akimbo intend to run a series of story-telling workshops over the course of the next 10 months, this project will seek to facilitate that ‘telling and listening’ within a theatrical setting involving music and multi-media technique with a group of self-referred clients/attendees from local day centres and institutions.

It is intended that the experience of formulating and then telling a part of their story with others, will contribute towards the sense of validation that comes through performance. Each workshop will be filmed so that individuals have a record of their developmental progress.

Paritas are pleased to support this great new project. If you would like to go along on the 19th September and find out how you can play your part then contact Thearte Akimbo directly.
